Felony Defendant Accepts Plea Offer from Nervous DA's Office

On Monday, July 16th Steve Swart, a defendant facing Felony aggravated assault on a police officer and three misdemeanor charges, was offered a deal in lieu of going to trial. The deal was a plea offer to a misdemeanor assault charge, two years probation, and 100 hrs. of community service. Steve, who was facing serious jail time, accepted the plea offer.

R2K Legal and Larry Krasner (Steve's attorney) have attempted to work out a deal with the District Attorney's office for months, however the DA insisted on taking Steve to trial. But after losing case after case, and examining the strong case we had prepared to defend Steve, the DA relented and cut a deal.

Steve Swart, a long-time and well respected Lansing area anti-racist activist, was one of the few remaining RNC felony defendants and his victory represents the strength and success of our court solidarity campaign to keep folks charged with felonies out of jail.

Despite all that we have won we have more work to do! We have over twenty folks who are still awaiting trail or in the appeals process. The Timoney 3, who are facing serious felony and misdemeanor charges, also await trial. We are also beginning to work on our civil suits campaign.

Solidarity Rocks!
