Prominent Lawyers From Around The Country Join Forces To Challenge Constitutional And Civil Rights Violations Following RNC Protests
Activists reach 6th day of hunger strike in prison

What: Press conference featuring prominent lawyers announcing collaboration to litigate gross violations of the constitutional and civil rights of approximately 450 people arrested before, during and after the protests of the Republican National Convention.

When: Tuesday, August 8th at 4:00 p.m.

Where: Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, 1213 Race Street, Center City Philadelphia

Background:
For the past two months the city of Philadelphia has been in regular dialogue with Jules Epstein, David Rudovsky, and Paul Messing from the R2K Philadelphia legal team. Once arrests began, however, the city shut down all possibility for dialogue. The City of Philadelphia is currently violating the constitutional and civil rights of the roughly 450 people arrested during the protests of the Republican National Convention.

As of today, 325 individuals arrested remain in jail. 149 have been on hunger strike, many for six days, and will be joined tomorrow by at least 30 more women held at PICC. They are all demanding the immediate release of all political detainees, standing in solidarity with the 36 activists unjustly charged with felonies. On Monday, only 16 persons, all charged with misdemeanors, were deemed eligible for ROR without bail -- the majority of petitions for bail reduction were not heard.

Initial Statement: We the underwritten organizations and lawyers will join together with the current Philadelphia legal defense committee to help litigate these gross violations to the fullest extent of the law.
