FBI-RELATED BOMBING VICTIM PERFORMING ON BEHALF OF RNC DEFENDANTS
Darryl Cherney's show will include songs and stories about how protecting the California redwoods led to a suit against the FBI. The show will open with Philadelphia local talent with desserts and beverages.
Who: Darryl Cherney, Earth First! activist and victim of FBI-related bombing, local R2K activists and community performers.
What: Performance by Cherney about defending California redwoods and FBI attacks against activists along with performances by local artists about struggles in Philadelphia.
When: March 16 -- Cherney's performance at 8:00pm. Doors open with local artists at 7:00pm.
Where: The Parlor, 1170 Broad Street (Broad Steet line to Ellsworth-Federal)
Why: The show will benefit activists who demonstrated at the Republican National Convention (RNC) and who were targeted by the FBI, State Troopers and the Philadelphia police. Cherney was also targeted by the FBI. In 1990 his car was bombed along with activist Judi Bari. They were organizing Redwood Summer, a mass demonstration to protect California redwoods. In October he will be bringing a lawsuit against the FBI because of the bombing.
Background: Federal Law Enforcement intimidation and repression are common threats against dissedents like Cherney and RNC defendants. The FBI was involved with the heavy-handed response to demonstrators during the GOP convention protests. In May, FBI agent Thomas Harrington told the Philadelphia Inquirer that protesters had become a focus of FBI operations and that the FBI was gathering intelligence in order to assist state and local agencies. Three arrested demonstrators were alleged to be ringleaders and were given million and half-million dollar bails. The evidence against those demonstrators was hours of FBI surveillance that contained no wrongdoing, and none of the felony allegations have been proven in court.
According to RNC felony defendant William Beckler, "Cherney's performance on behalf of the demonstrators will highlight the FBI's ongoing attacks on activists, and show that the shenanigans of the past have not come to an end." Proceeds from the benefit will go to the R2K Legal Collective, the group working on behalf of people arrested during the August 1 demonstrations. There are still twenty-five misdemeanor cases and eleven felony cases in the courts. Over ninety percent of the charges against the demonstrators have been dismissed.
