12 acquitted in protest that closed highway entrance
01/20/01 - Philadelphia Inquirer
A dozen protesters arrested for blocking an entrance to the Vine
Street
Expressway during the Republican National Convention were acquitted
of
all charges yesterday after a one-day trial in Municipal Court.
Judge Seamus P. McCaffery dismissed charges of resisting arrest,
conspiracy, obstructing the highway, and disorderly conduct against
the
12 young people arrested Aug. 1 while lying down and blocking traffic
on
the ramp to Interstate 676 at 16th and Vine Streets. McCaffery ruled
that
although the protesters clearly did block the road, their actions
were
permissible under law because they were engaged in free speech and
police
maintained control of the situation.
The defendants embraced each other and applauded when the judge made
his
ruling.
