Sunday spread: 'If they take one group's rights away, they'll take [another's]'
01/14/01 - Philadelphia Inquirer
Larry Frankel is executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania.
"It's surprising to me that there is a great deal of complacency whether it's about First Amendment rights, whether it's about criminal due-process rights, voter's rights. 'Until it happens to me, I'm not going to be that concerned about it.' From our perspective, it's one of the areas we need to work harder on. It's the old saw: If they take one group's rights away, they'll take another group's rights away. And eventually your rights.
I think there's been an unfortunate demonization strategy injected into our political life. It's like you can always hear them talk about criminals who aren't even human. This is happening to somebody else who isn't even worthy of being treated with the same rights as you are. There's a strong attempt to divide people up and say this is not going to happen to you because you're not as bad as they are."
