Sunday spread: 'They had a right to protest, and we had a right to keep the peace'
01/14/01 - Philadelphia Inquirer
Lt. Brad Christy, 46, was on patrol duty on Aug. 1, when he was summoned to 18th Street and the Parkway. In a confrontation, he suffered a broken bone in his right forearm and a torn ligament in his elbow.
"One male jumped on the hood of the police car. He was alone. He was dancing. I go to get out of the car. The window was down, and another was leaning in the window. He sucker-punched me in the head.
I was attempting to open the door, and I grabbed my nightstick. I'm fending him off with my left arm, he's trying to punch me. I grabbed for my nightstick with my right hand.
I wanted to force him away from the window area. That's when the third person began reaching in and fighting me for the nightstick. He's trying to pull the nightstick through the window."
Other police arrived, and Christy was able to get out of his car.
"Then I had a coward come up from behind me and maced me, sprayed me in the face.... Then it starts to burn. Basically I couldn't see or breathe for a few minutes.
We had different incidents with [the protesters]. We would baby-sit them. They had a right to protest, and we had a right to keep the peace. We had an incident on Broad and Spruce. They just sat down on Broad Street. They didn't want any confrontation. They just sat down in traffic. But this one here, they were hell-bent on destruction. I believe it was definitely an exception.
It's no fun to get hurt. They have a right to protest and we'll go along with them as far as we can, but once they began to destroy property, that's it."
